The Athens Pride festival made its debut in 2005 and became a registered non-profit legal entity in 2006. It is an all-volunteer organization, funded solely by donations, contributions in kind, and private sponsorship. The Athens Pride mission is, first and foremost, to encourage the visibility of Lesbians, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered persons in Greece and in Athens specifically. It aims to promote public awareness and acceptance of diversity in sexuality and sexual orientation. It provides a platform for other Greek LGBTQ NGOs and promotes personal and civil rights and equality in every aspect of society. Athens Pride, the main street festival and parade, takes place annually in the center of Athens, in or around the month of June, to commemorate the Stonewall Uprising (NYC, 1969), the event that marked the beginning of the gay rights movement worldwide. In addition, the Athens Pride committee organizes and supports auxiliary events throughout the year. These include panel discussions, exhibitions, fund-raising parties and concerts. The Organizing Committee welcomes proposals for such events. |
